Choosing the Right Type of Life Insurance
It’s almost a cliche to say that the best type of anything will depend on circumstance, but that is usually the case. The best education, medical treatment, and even life insurance is dependent on the needs, goals, and circumstances of each individual. Choosing life insurance can seem confusing, but if you start by identifying your personal needs and circumstances, it will be much easier to discuss options with an insurance agent.
One of the first things to consider is why you need insurance . If you are looking for insurance as an investment, your options are going to be very different than if you’re trying to protect your spouse and children from financial disaster in the case of your death. Do you have a mortgage that can only be paid off with your income? How many kids are you trying to raise and how much will it cost to put them through college once they are of age? Have you taken out any business or personal loans against your income rather than your spouse’s? Are there other investments, such as businesses or property that will need paying off or maintaining after you die?
Once you’ve listed all the reasons you’re seeking insurance, including projected years and amounts for loans, etc., you’ll want to do an honest assessment of your current financial situation, including realistic projected earnings for yourself and your spouse. After you have all that home work complete, then you can begin looking at specific term life insurance prices or investigating other life insurance options.
